Growing up in London just after the war, I became used to having a limited supply of everything. This is often reflected in my work, where I feel comfortable using a limited palette yet seek an unlimited range of subjects. My natural curiosity leads me to many different genres and time zones; this is where the mystery enters and the challenge begins - though not immediately.
A move to Sydney, Australia, marriage and three children later, I needed to fulfil my artistic needs. This became a reality when I was accepted at Wollongong University, where I studied history and theory of art, painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture, and received my Bachelor of Creative Arts with credits and distinctions.
Majoring in sculpture under Professor Bert Flugelman, I tend to see everything in three dimensions. I enjoy drawing and painting nudes for this reason, and I also feature figures in landscapes and cityscapes. I just love observing people - and my lively, funny, naughty children gave me tons of ammunition that I still draw on to this day.
I’ve had a string of occupations along the way - window dresser, bank teller, air hostess, co-running a graphic design studio with a long-time friend and fellow artist, and finally interior designer at David Jones, Sydney. Every one of them gave me valuable knowledge of life, or of life in people - such a mixing pot, no wonder my head is muddled!
I enjoy working across many different mediums: charcoal, watercolours, oils and acrylics. My subject matter fluctuates. At the moment, I have an interest in drawing the pubs of Balmain in a deconstructed style - completely recognisable but with a contemporary edge, softened with everyday people in them. Who doesn’t love pubs?
